From a diy standpoint, a good sniffer is out of reach financially speaking. Heck, I chase down sealed system leaks at least once a week and I still can't justify a grand on a good sniffer. Those fifty dollar sniffers go off if you blow on them.

There is no affect to a mobile Ac system when there is one ounce of dye in the system.
Would dye from a very small and slow leak in the evaporator show up at the drain? Where exactly will you look? Pull the drain tube from the evap housing (above the tunnel)?

Even a small leak will show up. You have to use a black light (ultra violet). If it leaks freon, it will leak dye, which will stain the drain tube, or the trans. Easy to spot under the car.
