removing dust shield?

1 Attachment(s)
Hey everyone,

Does anyone know how to remove the dust shield? Do I have to remove the control arm or is there another way to remove it.

My w123 sedan has a rusted out dust shield and it makes it so I can't clip in the parking brake shoes. I wanted to swap the dust shield for the one I have on the w123 wagon but if I have to remove the coil spring, shock absorber, disconnect the axle, and remove the control arm, it wouldn't make sense.

Thanks for any tips!

I'm not sure of the other components, but you will have to pull the axle.

I went to replace a missing one on my TD and, well, gave up and left it off. :o

I'd have to look at it closer to be sure, but removing the axle isn't going to get you anywhere, sure it likely has to be done, but I'd pull the rotor, and look at the plate itself and see if it comes off easily.

Answer.

You must remove:
* The axle.
* The wheel hub.
* The parking brake.

Here is what you are getting into.

And you need a 7mm Allen key to remove the block that holds one side of the parking brake shoes in position.

Be aware of hitting the axle assembly as described in the wiki - some people have reported that they damaged the axle threads before the axle shaft decided to come loose.

The FSM calls for a puller - I made my own out of wood(!) - see here:-

vitop recently made a more sensible bearing press out of metal =>

Thanks guys!! you are the best.

I was worried I would have to remove the entire control arm, and I JUST sold my spring compressor set yesterday on E bay. So that's great news.

Thanks again,

Ross

Where can I find the "Special socket". MB tool 115 589 02 07 00

Is this something a typical auto parts store would carry...?

Or wait, maybe I don't need that socket since I'm just trying to get the dust shield off....?

You can get it here via fastlane I guess or via the dealer. If you are pulling the hub you need this 2 pronged socket to tighten the nut when re-installing.
