Need to confirm socket size for 95 E300D injection nozzles

I'm going a little nuts. My service manual and numerous posts point to the injection nozzles on my 606.910 engine requires a deep 22mm socket with the side cut out so as to not damage the return line hose barbs.

The thing is I cannot even get a 22mm socket past the top of the injector holder?

From what I can measure deep down in the well, it looks like the holder hex is more like 27mm.

I'm attaching a pdf picture if it helps. Sorry the depth of field is really hard to capture.

Has anyone with a 606 engine found that they needed a larger socket to remove the injector holder?

Thanks for your help ahead of time.

If your engine has the Prechamber Retaining Rings with slots and the Injector screws into the Retaining Ring it talks a 27mm Socket. Because, the thread in the Retaining Ring and the Injector are 24mmX2.0.

If you have Splined Prechamber Retaining Rings the Injectors thread into the top of the Prechamber (22mmX1.5 threads). I believe that is the one you need the 22mm Socket on.

What is the sort of Football shaped piece in the Last pic? It looks like that would keep a socket from going on.

606's use the 22mm socket Diesel 911 linked to.

That's the return line hose barb

Ah, that is the area where the return line hose barb is located.

Attaching a side view that should help.

The barb does not extend beyond the hex that is down deep in the well. I think I must have the 27mm injector holder.

Thanks!!

27mm is correct. Unfortunately the return line pipes stick out a bit, where they line up with the points on the hex they fit the socket fine, where they line up with the flats on the hex, not so good. Relieving the inside of the socket to accomodate these pipes will save you bending one (or more) and creating a leak, which will cost you the holder as I don't know of a way to repair that other than possibly brazing.

Shoot, now I'm confused. I cleared out some fuel that was in the well (return lines were leaking and will be replaced) and it looks like I have the Splined retaining ring.

The thing is I took a cheap 22mm socket and cut off the head so that only the 22mm socket portion was left and it does not even fit over the injector holder head.

I'll get a 27mm socket and see if it fits.

Thanks again.

Let me know if I was wrong. I am going by the bits and pieces I have picked up on the forum concerning other models besides my own.

Below are slotted Prechamber Retaining Rings

I have always had the cam cover off when I've pulled injectors on mine.

No problem. This seems to be another area of grayness between documentation and reality. I'll post once I figure out exactly what's going on.

Ah ha! I was wondering if I should take off the cam cover. Is the gasket reusable or do I need to buy a new one?

engatwork 05-09-2011 10:34 AM

I'm trying to remember. There are some o-ring type seals that go in there and I know there is a gasket for the cam cover. I'm thinking it it o-ring type if I remember correctly.

Jim: Thanks a bunch. The valve cover was the trick :)

The injector housing hex is 22mm for my car, so I'm ordering a deep socket.

And the gaskets look like o-ring material, but someone used rtv on them so I'm replacing them too.

Thanks again!
