she said the brakes were a little noisy...

she has had the truck for less than 1000 miles...
I'm thinking a pre purchase inspection would have been worthwhile...

she only stopped and had me look at the car because the flex hose failed, and she lost fluid, and the car would not stop!

Floating caliper didn't, that's why the lopsided wear. Rotor on my honda's a bit lopsided still good meat on it, freed up the floating caliper. Wasn't into popping the LCA to swap a rotor

That appears to be under the minimum allowable thickness, and rust does not count when measuring.

Do you not have required annual safety inspections in SC? That would have failed in PA a few years prior.

I don't know, but John is in NC (as am I). Yes, there is an annual safety inspection. However, not all inspection stations check brake condition as part of the routine... when I take mine in, they don't take any wheels off. All they do (diesels are emissions exempt) is check to make sure the headlight alignment is set so that nobody is getting blinded, make sure the horn sounds and all exterior lights work when appropriate (no burned out bulbs), and check the tire tread depth. Then they sign it off and that's that. SOME of them will look under there to see if you have obviously eliminated emissions devices such as cat converters, but not all even do that.

Oh, and they use a meter if they see visible window tinting to make sure it's not above the maximum allowed percentage of opacity.

On gas powered cars they are much more stringent about the emissions systems. Diesels practically get a free pass.

That being said, some stations do seem to do more "inspecting" than others. John (vstech) posted something here a week or two ago -- I can't remember what thread it was in now, and am too tired to go looking, but he said that his 300SD failed inspection due to something or another... and whatever it was, it was something that up here in my part of the state they don't even check for in the inspections. It's all "supposed" to be standardized, but different people have different levels of... shall we say, thoroughness, about what they'll pass and what they'll fail.

yup, I was in a hurry, and took my car to a firestone service station for an inspection... stupid mistake. OF course they scrutinized my tires, and failed all but one of them to age, cracking, and below minimum tread... they further searched for issues, and "informed" me that my Idler arm was worn, and all my brake hoses showed signs of cracking... the hoses were 8 years old, and I had planned on changing them next brake job in about 20K miles... but I had new ones on the shelf, so I took it home, changed everything, brought it back and had a set of their store brand tires installed, and everything passed.
some stations will just ask me if anything needs checking, and pass on the spot. *(they know me)

No matter what the Seller has told me ever Car or Truck I have bought; including the Mercedes had to have Brake Work done after I bought it.

When I was in Trade School we had people come in for a free brake inspection and 80% of the ones we inspected needed some sort of Brake work.
It makes you think there are a lot of Folks driving right now with poor Brakes.

And why they insist on driving with a braking distance of 2cm...

Just weld a piece of 3/8 plate over the old surface !! I am sure there are a few running around like that!!
It would have given an interesting hand massage when you put your foot on the brake !!!

yeah, I've seen broken rotors, and thin rotors that had just a broken sliver stuck between the pads.
but always on the rear, where it's less likely to notice noise or pull...
this was on the front of this girl's truck... little chevy blazer.
oh,
and she didn't want to change all the hoses... just the broken one...
I repeat myself...
moron.

That is the scariest thing I have ever seen on the net. To think that someone was driving around with that issue.
