leaky windshield diy repair?

My windshield started leaking from the top. Has anyone tried to repair this by pressing silicone around all the edges? Should I bother, or just prepare to replace the seal... I have a coupe, so replacing the seal won't be a cake walk.

Seal replacement is the best way - silicone can be made to work but it looks awful. You can buy the new seal and then have a glass company install it for you. About $100 I'd guess.

I don't even think you can get the seal, I think you have to buy one from a wagon and modify it.

If you go to an auto parts store, you can buy windshield sealant. It's like a clear thinned out silicone sealer that gets in all the cracks and does not make a mess. I've used it a few times. It will buy you some time till you can do the seal job right.

clear sealant

I put the clear windshield sealant on the outside of the glass; no more leaks since 12-18 months. $5 tube fixed the problem for me!

keep in mind that silicone will rot the metal in your car.
urethane is better.

If you decide to go the new seal route, you can get one from Mercedes Benz classic center. You will get one that is made for the European market but it fits just fine. It is not always possible to get the windshield out without breaking it so be prepared. The sedan seal will not work.

I had my seal re-done over the winter. It was $106 for the seal and $100 to install. I was lucky and the glass did not break and was not de-laminating. There was not rust under the seal. Make sure if you have rust that you treat that area before the new seal/glass is installed. This is really not a DIY job unless you really know what you are doing.

I asked my local independent German car shop where they went for glass work and he sent me to a shop that was familiar with MB glass. They did a great job.
