10 Cars That Refuse to Die

Here is a list of 10 cars that refuse to die, it was on my Comcast page this morning.

The mercedes from 75 to 85 is listed, just after a Fiat .

Don't agree with all of them

Interesting list!

Don't agree with the Cherokee or Accord being in the 'refuse to die' camp. Also I think the Crown Vics do better in warmer climes (this was in another thread here recently). Here in the Canadian upper northeast they fall apart in about six or eight years.

The Honda spot should have been the Civic. The Accord hasn't been that good for years.

Yea I agree with you Zach about the crown Vic's. Here in Chicago they last about 3-4 years as taxies or police cars. Maybe it made the list cause there are like 12384972183718923467812467816 of those built

You're right. In Houston, it's not uncommon to see a 25 year old Panther body Ford (Crown Vic, Grand Marquis or Town Car) float down the freeway.

The NUMMI-built Geo Prizms have really held up here in the frost belt. The GM badge made them very popular, too -- I see them all the time. And they seem of have dodged the tinworm pretty well. Swift move on the part of GM to shut the NUMMI plant down. It had punched out a lot of Pontiac Vibes (along with Toyota products) since the Prizm days.

The E30 is another worthy entry on the list, especially considering how much flogging they've generally taken over their lifespan. Most of the other cars were built for (and driven by) the granny demographic.

what about the ford taurus? You see tons of those things tooling around. And they are peddled to the low income crowd at virtually any buy-here pay-here lot. Ya they tend to need transmissions but the yards are full of them. So replacements are easy to get.

I am an advocate for the panther vics/town cars/grand M. Big reliable car. I had a Charger rental car a few months ago. I doubt you will see one on the road in 10-15 years. What a huge plastic POS.

I had a 300 rental and I could see it wheezing along for years to come...

I'm going to have to disagree about the Cherokee and Accord. My experience is that a Cherokee will easily go over 200,000 miles if even moderately well maintained.

A friend of mine has a '91 Accord with around 230k showing on the odometer. The kicker is that the odometer was broken for about four years and the actual mileage is probably more like 280,000. And if she ever cleaned it out, the car would even look pretty decent.

I haven't lived in a particularly rust-prone area since long before I was old enough to drive. The Ford Panther platform lasts forever in the environments where I've encountered them. As I said in another thread, I've seen more of them over 300,000 miles than any other car.

Looking at the article from the OP, I have to dissent on the first two on the list. Wrong wheel drive domestics just don't last. I have to really wonder about the Fiat 500. I saw one on tv once and it seemed like an interesting car, but it doesn't seem like something that would last a really long time.

In my opinion the XJ Cherokee belongs on the list. I joke with the wife we'll fall through the floor before the drive train quits. Minimum maintenance should get you 200K easy.

I would add the older Toyota Camrys and the Nissan Sentra (the old boxy body style).

Both seemed to last forever, even in the rust belt.

I'll also second the nomination for the Taurus, the 'bubble' body style anyway.

Funny about the Crown Vics. I haven't got anything against them, guys, heck I like big RWD cars... but honestly here in the rustbelt they're disposablus maxiumus....

If you ask a mechanic whos been around for more than 20 yrs he could probably add some thoughts to the list.
Now what would you say would make the 10 worst list?
