Chasing the vacuum gremlins
Proud new owner of a 1995 E300D
When I first received the vehicle it was shifting pretty hard. I did a rough check of the vacuum system and replaced all vacuum hoses around the EGR and VCV (I was very careful to diagram and reconnect everything exactly how I found it). Took it to my mechanic who found that the vacuum modulator was not holding vacuum and so it was replaced. With the new modulator in and correctly setup the hard shifts were much less harsh. My tech traced the leak to a switch-over solenoid that connects to the VCV. He plugged the line going to the switch-over solenoid and the transmission now shifts smoothly but not soo smoothly as to flare. I have pulled the solenoids off and blown through them to make sure that they are not clogged (they weren't) and cleaned the contacts with contact cleaner. From this I believe that either the system is incorrectly setup or that the switch-over valve has failed. Does anyone know what this solenoid controls? Would another member who owns a 1995 mind taking a picture of their setup or drawing a diagram so that I know I have it correctly connected? More pictures ... (the line in question) The solenoid in question The system Thanks in advance! |
