1983 300TD hits bumps hard in rear.
My 1983 300TD hits bumps hard in the rear. I have replaced the accumulators and there is no leaks. Question is, If the springs where a little saggy and the self leveling system was holding her up in the rear it would ride hard?
Thanks. Jay

new spheres and still bumpy?
how's the ride level? did you bleed the fluid out of the system? is the pump working? is the valve working? Is the Valve adjusted for center?

She is level and rises when loaded up. Its not that bouncy and banging ride you get when system is not working. When I say rough, I mean hits harder then front. When I hit a bump/pot hole it soaks up the bump in the front and seams to bang in the rear. Feels like the rear shocks are a lot tighter in the rear then front. Now I know that the shocks will be tighter when shes loaded up. Just wondering if I had the shocks taken out and had new springs should she sit level? Because before I replaced the accumulators it would sag in the rear if not driven for few days. So she must be keeping the rear held up with the shocks, and that's where the hard ride is coming from.

There are no shocks in the rear. There are hydraulic rams that look like shocks. The shock absorbing is done with the accumulators. The system is designed so that part of the load is carried on the springs and part carried on the hydraulic rams under all conditions. This is not to say your springs aren't worn or broken, just that removing the hydraulic rams will result in a system not robust enough to carry the load of an empty wagon.

I think the system should be better evaluated. By description its hard to ascertain what is going on exactly. The dynamics of bump absorption are very different front to rear simply because the systems are very different from each other.
Weight is biased toward the rear so the rear has more to handle. It is always going to seem a little more of a rough hit to the rear...Maybe drive backwards at the same speed over the same bump. Any different? (Just an absolutely crazy thought).

System was checked and is working like it should. Going to replace the springs. I'm sure there stock and would not hurt to put in new pair. I relived pressure on system and she sits low. I'm sure with no load aboard it should not drop so much. Thanks everyone.

I believe there are specs in the FSM to measure this if my memory serves me correctly. It should sit lower with the pressure relieved. There may be a thread on here somewhere which states exactly how much that is.
