Warm AC when still, cold AC when moving. What gives?

83 SD AC is warmish when the car is not moving. Nice and cold when moving! The aux fan is on. Anyone tried upgrading the aux fan? My problem is obviously air flow. Anyone had any problems with the aux fan? It doesn't seem to move a whole lot of air. I tried cleaning/washing it....made no difference..

Any ideas??

R134A or R12?

Have you put gauges on the system?

Your car is 28 years old. Have you ever cleaned the radiator and evaporator fins?

There have been a few other threads with SD's saying the compressor is cutting out. Maybe not an airflow problem, but a compressor relay-engine RPM problem?

Does the compressor stay engaged at idle?

This is the second OP in the last week that posts a question... stays on the site long enough for several people to ask legit questions trying to help..
Then goes offline without answering the questions...
At the time I posted he was still online...
I even PM'd him when I saw that he was online and had not answered 79Mercy's question yet...

I wouldn't worry about it. Logged on doesn't mean looking at this page, maybe minimized, maybe busy.

Yes, I have great empathy for people who are not getting cold air from their car AC...

I've only owned one MB with working AC. That is/was the 123 I resurrected/SOLD last summer.

We own the Suburban (how hard is it to get good HVAC from a GM rig?) and two non-functioning MB systems. C'est la vie . . . my burden to bear.

everybody needs to understand, a moving vehicle while under a larger heat load due to airflow over the chassis, RPM of the compressor is a HUGE a/c difference than at idle/low RPM...

The OP's complaint was the opposite situation... the moving potentially giving the needed difference in Airflow across the condensor or rpm for compressor to make up the difference from the deficit at idle....

no.
the OP is describing exactly the issue with a mobile a/c system.
what I meant is that even though the air moving over the car makes for a larger heat load on the a/c system, the higher RPM of the compressor more than makes up for it, and provides much better cooling.

improving condenser airflow can make some difference at idle, but NOTHING beats RPM for improved cooling from the system.
