Restoring torque for speedometer
'90 300D 2.5L Turbo <<-- Don't think it matters though.
My odometer had stopped working. I took the speedometer apart, removed the odometer, cleaned it up, and super-glued the incrementing gear on the shaft. Putting the unit back together. Here's the picture - In the picture the pointer is pointing to 6:00. If I leave the restoring spring set at that point and rotate the pointer CW to the other side of the rest at zero (actually ~ 10 MPH) when I take it for a drive the speedometer doesn't move until I'm going 25 MPH or so (the odometer is working though). I have too much restoring torque. How do I set the pointer at its resting position correctly? Thanks. |

On the Volkswagen & Audi VDO speedo's I've taken apart there's a mark on the face where you align the needle with the spring "at rest", then pop the needle back over the stop post.
If there is no mark you might have to do the tedious guess and check method... pull the needle off, put it back, go for a test drive, repeat -J
