W115 1976 240D Oil Cooler Rad blew

So I was driving on a country road and noticed my oil pressure go down to 3/4 from full... which NEVER happens on a diesel.

Pulled over, shut her off to see that oil was leaking very badly out of the oil cooler radiator part. This part is right beside the rad itself and looks like a "mini-me" version of the rad. It has two hoses going into it, obviously a send a recieve.

My question is, can I just bypass it with a rubber hose if I'm not in a hot climate? Does anyone know of ANY websites that sell this part? I could not find one and I know alot of sites. Please help. Also what do you think about engine damage? Do you think I did any?

Thank you all for your time, opinions and experience. Its much appriciated.

In my opinion it can be bypassed. If you don't want to bypass it and can't find an OE at a parts supplier or in a junkyard, you could use an aftermarket oil cooler.

This is a pic of it from mercedes, PART #14, apparently its $650 LOL. Do you think ANY parts website would sell this part?

Omg $650 for this small part... I hope bypassing it wont damage the engine. If anyone knows of special parts websites that MIGHT sell this part please let me know.

Those coolers are notoriously expensive. Perhaps one off a 123, 116 or 126 might fit. If so, finding one in a junkyard becomes much easier.

Is it leaking off the oil cooler itself or the hoses...?

Cooler itself, if it was the hoses or O-RINGS's i'd just replace them

I don't think there are any o-rings in the system. At least there's not on 123's or 126's.

So its either the hose leaking or the cooler itself? Would bypassing it do any damage?

I measured the cooler on our 80 240D. both hoses connect to the bottom.
3 1/4 wide, and 17" tall. and 18 1/2 to the top of the 2 alum. tubes.

The cooler from the W123/W126.
4 1/4 wide across the front. add in the top and bottom mounting points, 4 3/4 wide.
20 1/4 tall. 2" thick. one hose connects to the top, and one to the bottom.

They can be pulled from PNP for about $20.

I doubt you will be doing damage to your engine if you by passed it.
I have seen some engines at PNP w/o the coolers, but think the engines that have AC will have the coolers. my 240 has AC but not hooked up.
I think all the turbo engines have the coolers, mainly because of additional heat from the turbo cooling the bearing..

Thank you so much for the reply, I don't have AC or a Turbo so I guess I'll just bypass it for now. In the future I'd like to find a 240d with the same oil cooler (i like to stay original without paying $600 per part )

PNP = Pick N Pull.

Where do you live? fill in you info, that will help you if some one lives near you, and also your mode of transportation in your signature.

240`s show up now and then, sometimes one and at times maybe 3 in the same yard.

you can look here in their web site, and under what ever tab it is, see what the inventory is in the various yards.

www.picknpull.com

this is 240D`s within 200 miles from where I live
