A/C Clutch Issue
1980 300d, A/c was working good, then all of sudden won't cool. When the a/c is switched on the compressor clutch makes a noise, but the compressor will not spin, noise goes away if I turn it off. Looks to be the clutch is not working. How hard is it to replace the clutch? Is it better to replace the whole compressor? The compressor was replaced in 2008. Anyone know of a good repair shop in Fort Wort, TX.

It also looks like most of the hoses were replaced as well as the drier. How do I know if it is still an r12 system or has been converted to r134

When I had my Hyundai Sportage , it had a nippondenso compressor, and it was not a big problem getting to the clutch. There were some cir clips that need to be removed, and in that particular compressor, there were shims that could be added or removed to give you the proper clutch to compressor clearance. I guess it all depends on the type of compressor you have installed. Good luck!

Can you spin the clutch by hand, or by spanner if it's an R4?
