This is quite a job, needless if your engine is quiet (no ticking sound when idling hot). If regular oil changes were a part of the history on an engine they should not need replacing. To get to them you remove the cam cover then the timing gear/chain is removed the cam comes out by loosening the bolts in a very specific sequence only then can you pull the cam followers .... its probably a good idea to replace the timing chain while its off unless its been replaced before . . . more $$$$

x2 = don't touch them if they're not ticking. Cam r&r is tedious. Grins and giggles wear off quickly.

I have a feeling I will need to switch to synthetic. I am getting a little bit of a tick, or sell a kidney and buy everything to replace the chain, all lifters, and do the vacuum pump.

My VW repair manual has a nice procedure for testing hydro. lifters:

			4. Cylinder Head - 4.6 Hydraulic Cam Followers - Checking Hydraulic Cam Followers That said with all the bother of taking the chain apart I'd want to replace all the lifters if I was that far into it. It's too bad the Mercedes lifters cost 2x what VW ones do ![]() -J

No matter what you do DO NOT use a magnet to lift them out.

I wrote that thinking that they were going to be reused. What happens is that they will get magnetized and attract metal particles which destroys them after a period of time.

Use a suction cup to pull them up and out.

I held my head upside down and all the lifters slowly plopped out... onto the cement floor.
