Update on my rebuilt 300D (new problem: transmission)
Well, I haven't been posting much lately because I have been enjoying my 300D, driving it around town, to work and back. As some of you may remember I rebuilt the motor last year. It burns no oil, it's got a new radiator and radiator tank, and the transmission got the new filter and Mobil1 ATF for like $8 a quart.
Well, yesterday on my way home, all of a sudden transmission just quit on me. No 'D', 'S' or 'L', no 'Reverse'. Just nothing. It's not the linkage because if I put it in Park, I can tell that it's in park. It's not that splined triangular-like thing where the drive shaft goes (I climbed under the car and the driveshaft was where it should be) My wife (god bless her) towed me home (with a pickup truck and a tow rope) - yea she's a keeper I know. One interesting thing is - on the way home, if I put the transmission in D while being towed and give it some gas, I could tell the car would surge forward. Maybe this was not a good thing to try, but I couldn't resist it, and the motor was running anyway. So, it's like the tranny engages if the car is already moving (25+ mph) but not if the car is not moving. Don't know if this is significant or not. What do you guys think? Update: I will look for transmission numbers when I get home from work today. |
Could be a primary pump problem. Which transmission do you have? And I'll look some stuff up for you...
|
have you checked the fluid level?

Maybe the pump drive tabs on the TC have broken off. |

Sorry didn't get a chance to climb under it last night; will definitely do it today What are the pump drive tabs and since you are all talking about the pump one way or another, what has to come out? The whole engine + tranny thing out again? |
If it is the front pump or TC tabs - then it is transmission out.
I've put in loads of pictures of these bits here http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/304903-722-118-automatic-transmission-rebuild-monster-diy.html But it only covers 722.118 transmissions - you might have a 722.3 => very different looking. Because you are getting some sort of feeling of drive when fiddling about with the selector lever whilst being towed that sounds like the secondary pump (at the back of both transmissions) is working so that's why I'm thinking the front pump is at fault. |
An easy way to determine if the pump is out is to disconnect one of the trans cooler hoses and see if fluid shoots out of it. If it doesn't (and you tried all the gears) then it's the front pump.
One question Konstan, when you installed your torque converter, did you turn the torque converter in the trans to seat it properly? There a few "drives" that the torque converter has to connect to and the only way to properly seat it is to turn it several times (like at least 10x's) along with pressing it in as you turn. . |
sounds like possible b2 piston failure since it would move at higher speeds...
|
+1 B2 piston failure.
|
If he had reverse I'd go along with a B2 problem - but he says that is gone too...
|
You're right, I missed that.

Transmission numbers:
123 2705901 722 315 02 206754 And yes there is NO reverse or forward. Where can I begin troubleshooting? |

I put about 700 miles on it after the rebuild. The entire time the tranny felt like a new car. It shifted confidently, firm but not rough. |
pull a cooler line and see if its pumping.
