I have one of those tank heaters, but I havn't installed it. I think mine is around 1200 watts. I also have the one that goes into the block, which I havn't installed yet either. However, I do have one that a previous owner installed in the radiator hose, which doesn't seem to work that well.
Battery heaters will also help assist with cold weather starting. The best suggestion I have for people, is to make sure that they have a good starter, and it should be the updated model. Once I replaced the starter, I was able to start the car when it was in the 20s with no problem at all... |

After having to deal with starting problems on 27 cars of mine or someone else's (yes, I counted them) I have concluded the following: 1. The most important thing is viscous oil. If the crank can turn fast, it can compress. If it compresses you get enough heat to start. If it runs slow, nothing works. My only MB oil choice is Mobil1 0W40. 2. I have found companies that sell oil heaters that are heating elements attached to the drain plug on the oil pan and run 110VAC. They plug in - just like block heaters. They keep the oil in the pan at about 100 degrees. 3. After hot oil, battery power is next. Initial glow power and power to turn the crank are important. So if you make it easy to turn the crank via thin/hot oil, everything else works. Heat in the engine compartment from oil or block heaters usually is trapped in the engine compartment and helps the battery
