You beat me to it Army !!!

I think we need a sub-forum for "oil" threads.

There appear to still be plenty of snakes in the world & people trying to squeeze oil out of them.

"Oils Is Oils" !!!! Get used to it.

The magic foo foo juice additives are mainly marketing hype.
Buy a well known good quality oil rated for your car & be done with it.

The molecules in the oil dont know their parentage, if they came from a refinery or a petrochemical plant ~ they use crude as feed stock anyway.

Have a look in your owners manual (that little book in your glove box that you should have read when you first got your car) about what the oil specification for your car is.

Switched my 300sd to synthetic at about 216,000....currently at 314,000+ and running great....keeps the engine super clean and makes the timing chain last forever...only half a degree of stretch on the chain I put in at 212k!

I have used Amsoil 15W40 Marine Diesel Oil in the 1984 300DT for the past twenty years. As a result, the valve train is clean enough to eat off of. I'm about to reroute the Amsoil bypass filter set up using the oil cooler lines for the bypass which should work better than the current set up.

Oil is just oil, but Amsoil is a religion.

Considering that religion involves strongly-held beliefs totally unsupported by science, I suspect that your analogy is right on target.

Just asking.

I agree. Switching to a diesel rated synthetic will not harm the engine.

Oil topics are sooooooooo subjective!!! my .02 Pick a Good oil brand and don't 2nd guess! I've used Shell Rotella T6, & Mobile 1 in my TDI's and Mercedes with absolutely ZERO issues 300K plus miles on multi cars!!

The only car I've experianced motor failure was a 1992 Camry(blew hole in side of motor from clogged oil passages) and that was due to my nephew NOT changing the oil!!!

Good rule of thunb: Change oil & Filter. AND change it often!!

YES, they basically are the same religion (same base stock) just some of the additives are the different. , lots of analogies here

I have been happy with Amsoil 15W40 Marine Diesel Oil for years but have never taken it for a religion.

I use AMS diesel oil and went 18K miles on my last oil change, having it tested every 4K miles

of course I run my own well made and filtered B100 and my oil dipstick looks like honey even after 5K miles

While I am one who likes synthetics, but not to the point of being religious about the whole thing, I would point out that synthetic oil is a real benefit to cold morning startups for those of us who live where it gets extra-frosty in the winter months.

But really, folks: Has anyone ever heard of a motor failure, or read about a motor wear issue, related to the use of dino vs sythetic oil? That is, not one related to neglected changes or use of cheap oil outside spec for the vehicle....

I have been on car forums since the mid-1990s and I cannot recall one....

Whatever floats your boat, as the saying goes.

I ran Amsoil in my MBs 10K having it tested but now run 6 K and forget the testing, I'm convinced all is well.

I just switched over a few months ago. Morning starts and warm up times are better and as the temperature drops it will be a real benefit. As I run a WVO blend the above benefits are magnified. Conversely in the heat of summer you may notice your engine marking it's territory a little more.
