Euro speedometer
This is incredibly unimportant, but thought I'd post it because of my ongoing curiosity. The Euro speedometers in km/h have a cross-hatching in yellow between 50 and 60 km/h. What is it for?
I've seen this on all models from the 1970's & 1980's, regardless if petrol or diesel. I don't know if they are on Canadian vehicles though. This is one of those things that intrigued me since I was a kid, as I always checked out Mercedes cars. I now know what the I, II, III marks mean thanks to this forum (and many other previously unknown mysterious Benz features like the idle speed control, standing lights and that little spring that holds the fuel cap), so maybe someone here knows about this, too.

it looks to be positioned right in the "55 MPH" zone... perhaps there is a school zone rule in UK?

I think I know this one. After a check of speed limits within various European countries, it looks like all of them have an "in town" speed limit of 50 km/h. I bet it was easier to have a cross hatch range up to 60 just to allow for a tolerance or something. Interesting observation.

yup it's 50 km/h inside the city unless otherwise posted (the 50 km/h won't be posted inside the city most of time since every german driver knows it's 50 km/h) the I II III marks are the shift points ( you're supposed to shift to the next higher gear before you reach the mark)

I'd been wondering about that one as well. Now I know.

I wondered what this was too for a while, 'till I drove on the continent and had to look up the speed limits. Our (UK) speedos are in mph and kph, with the main outer ring in mph and a small kph ring. There is no shading on the speedo though, I've only seen this on European models. Our in-town speed limit is generally 30mph, which luckily roughly equates to 50kph, making it easier when I drive in France and Germany etc to stay within the law...

Thanks! This makes perfect sense. It's been a long time since I've been in Europe.
