What is wrong with this 'classic 81' 300D?

Mercedes-Benz : 300-Series Mercedes-Benz : 300-Series | eBay

Another ebay 300D.. I know this car has got to be off and so far I've found
1st instrument cluster has no tach (didn't 80 or 81-85 have tach's?)
2nd which relates to the cluster, Mileage: last reported to car-fax: 151,700 in 2007... being 2011 now...
3rd: the right passenger side of the car, the front fenders doesn't appear to match the front door or the rest of the car on that side (possibly body work? the pin stripping is usually a dead giveaway to body work)

4th: honestly, the engine bay and verious other close range shots of the body, look like they have a lot more wear than 130K... what do 'y'all' see wrong?

Look at the trim on the lower edges of both front wings / fenders - that ain't right.

Lots of corrosion on that car - I get the impression the outside has been tarted up.

Engine bay seems out of sorts compared to the body. They could have spent an hr detailing the engine bay and solved that problem.

Pictures taken at such angles tend to hide alot of body issues. Ask for some pics that are near-straight to the body. The price is a killer. Looks like the engine was just power blasted.

Hmm

Please note the fractured glove box wood trim..

Brake fluid looks like coal..

Corrosion in the engine compartment would cause me to put it on a hoist for extreme under body inspection...

IMO: Without further inspection it is a $1500.00 - $3000.00 car.

Yeah, looks like an cluster from a 240D. I'd be concerned about those ill fitting fenders and the right front door.

Lack of a tach is correct for that year. However, the odometer reading is not right. There are no underbody shots. I believe the car is a respray and is probably a rust bucket underneath. The cost is about an order of magnitude too high.

The rocker panels do look like they have been recently recovered. What did they cover up? Body looks good on the pictures. Only a very close eyeball inspection might indicate a body problem coverup. Engine doesn't look glamerous - has rust and is dull looking. I think only the turbo diesel had a tachometer. Worse then no tack is no turbo! Then it also has that very troublesome climate control, (I think) I think they are asking double what it's worth.

Being a Euro, I would have thought it would have manual heater controls instead of the Type III push buttons.

the engine shot is a dead give away as to where it came from, the rust belt. the seller location is Philadelphia. that is one scroungy engine bay.

the bottom edge of the front fenders is a dead give away it has been in a front end colision. can see the paint difference in one of the photos.

L/R seat belt doesn`t wind all the way in.

I don`t remember seeing the center vents with the air shut off option before.
the red light by the idle control, must be for the security alarm.
Has the Becker Analog radio, don`t see them much any more.

IMHO -- That is a 240D interior. Count the pleats on the seats. A 300D has one more. Plus, look at the back of the seats -- that is a 240D back and not a 300D. Also, not a clear shot of the engine bay, but all 300D had the welded bracket that holds the tach amp. Take a good look at the dash. That is a 240D dash and not 300D. My guess is that someone put in a 5 cylinder engine with auto trans into a 240D body, except the climate control puzzles me. Should be manual. Being from south of Philly, that car most likely has tons of rust. Something looks odd about the front fenders and the way they sit.

That's a non turbo car with a early version interior- exactly as it should be. Non turbo's never had a tach. Nothing wrong with that as people have suggested. Plenty of rusty looking areas in the engine area- looks like the rest of the car was painted. $1000 to $2500 car IMHO, depending on how it runs and drives.

Who said it was a euro car? No indication it is a euro.

I bought my 240D in similar shape, including a respray over rust and the same white/blue color combo. My interior wasn't quite as nice, and the slave cylinder needed replacing. I paid $480.

where do you see 151K on the carfax report? in 2007 it shows 107K... according to the ad. do you have a different carfax report that you pulled?
if so, that's fraud and EBAY should be contacted.

oh, and it looks to me like the ENTIRE driver's side of the car has been replaced.
both front and rear fenders look "off" certainly a frontal collision, if not a t-bone situation.
