606 Glow Plugs Bosch or Beru

Yesterday I removed all 6 glow plugs without breakage from my 95. I used a glow plug removal tool (hinged nut and spacers) Two of the plugs are beru and the remainder are bosch. I installed the bosch a few years ago. (i left two because they were too stuck).

The two beru plugs have about twice as much hex head surface and just look stronger. I have 6 new bosch waiting to go in, but I'm really leaning toward getting 6 new beru. They just seem so much stronger. And future removal is likely to be difficult.

Anyone know or have any opinions on which plug to use? I'm not driving this car more than once a week now down from 350 miles in difficult traffic every week.

By the way, I used the appropriate reamer, rifle cleaning brushes and gun cleaning daubers to clean the glow plug holes. I used a product called carbon cutter (made to clean AR-15 rifles) and it did a nice job. The holes are nice and shiny now. I can even see the bevel down in there.

(tried unsuccessfully to attach pics)

I've had much better luck with Beru. Bosch didn't even make two years but the Beru are still going after five.

By the way, how did you manage to get the two out which you left in from a previous job?

I've got Beru in mine, and the ones I recently replaced that'd been in there since I got the car were Mercedes star-marked Beru, (in there over 6 years) so I guess that's what you'd get at the dealer. I've heard grumblings of the quality on some Bosch parts going down a bit, I'm sure they'd be fine but might fail sooner than the Beru.

Dealer? I'd be inclined to put the Bosch ones in if I already had them, it's not like they're a really cheap brand that you know will fail quickly. Just put anti-seize on the threads, and don't go mad torquing them in. You said you'd cleaned up the threads and reamed nicely so hopefully they'd come out again fairly easily.

Dealer

American Service Center in Arlington, VA doesn't have Beru in stock. Guy said that they couldn't guarantee they could get Beru so I passed.

I have the bosch on hand, but this is such an awful job that I don't want to have to do it again for a long time. I'll wait until I find Beru.

What is this "carbon cutter" of which you speak? Inquiring minds want to know.

I had the dealer install 6 glow plugs a year or two ago. The plugs they installed were Bosch with the Mercedes logo on the box, according to the dealer. I have the old plugs, in the new boxes, which are also Bosch, but I don't think any of them are original, so I am not sure what the car was shipped with.

My experience with GP's suggests if Beru are 10 out of 10, then Bosch are 8 out of 10. Champion are lucky to be 2 out of 10 ~ never use them !!
If the car is used for plenty of long distance high speed trips ~ >100miles, the GP's are less likely to become coked up & stuck. Short trips on a cold motor is a successful way to coke up GP's.

Chris,
It's called Slip 2000 Carbon Cutter. Cuts gunk on gun parts - and glow plug holes. Google it and it will come up.
