Somewhere on PP forum is a thread from a guy who created a new system using a Toyota Corolla heater valve and a control panel from a Cavalier (?). He did it in an R107, I believe.
I read it once but now I cannot find it. Images, I am not suggesting this as a fix for you at this moment but I am wondering if anyone else has read it and found it do-able.
