Key won't go all the way in, 80 300d

Searched but could not find any info. 1980 300d, tried to lock the car last night and I could not get the key to go all the way in. Now we did just have a cold spell, so it could just be frozen. But the key has always gone in kind of rough. Is this a common issue and if so what is the proper route to correct?
