Now diesel fuel is over $1/gal more than unleaded in Utah..what gives?
The average price in Salt Lake City for regular unleaded is now around $3.17/gal. Diesel is at the $4.25 mark and has been there for months. Call me crazy, but that sounds way off kilter. Any ideas what is actually going on? Is the gap the same elsewhere?

the gap is about 80 cents here, I assume it is home heating oil driving it up, but not sure.

Diesel is now $1 more than unleaded here in northwest Ohio.
Total BS! In my opinion it's politics. Many more people to scream about the price of gas than the price of diesel. I never thought I'd see the day when driving my gasser fintail (19mph) was nearly as economical as driving my 300TD (28mpg)

There was another similar thread. A few news reports said domestic demand for gasoline is down more than 5%. Demand for diesel is high. Gas prices have dropped, diesel stayed high. You can see the curves here: Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update

It's between .50 and .80 difference here... I have still been able to find diesel for $3.47.

Gas here in Kansas is $3.05 and diesel is $3.89.
Price of diesel goes up = price of goods goes up.

Diesel REFINED in THE USA (From whatever Source) is AN EXPORT PRODUCT
The "Seven Sisters" have their "Probe" WAAAAAY up your Wallet/Purse.
Diesel refined in the U.S. is shipped overseas in direct co-relation to the Prices Attainable with refined Diesel in the United States. It's a "Floating" crap game to Keep Diesel Prices Artificially HIGH here!

Exactly! People scream when gas prices are high, but not when diesel prices go up. They think they are getting a bargain because they "don't drive a diesel", failing to realize they are still paying for the high cost of Diesel with out even using it.......increased prices of goods that are delivered by..................................wait for it...............................Diesel powered trucks, trains, or ships.
The oil companies drop the price of gas, then look less evil to the public while diesel stays high. Guess who is laughing all the way to the bank

Look what's happening to our gas
Quote:
I'm guessing the fraction that represents jet fuel, kerosene, diesel, heating oil and other "oil" products is having high demand right now. I guess the solution is to keep both diesel and gas vehicles around and play fuel arbitrage based on the relative pricing.

$3.99/gal at the nearby Arco close to work, before heading home. One-time $0.35 transaction fee is not a problem when the local (close to home) fuel station sells diesel for $4.27/gal.

Higher diesel prices allow for oil companies to give consumers the illusion of fair pricing while screwing truckers over and still making a killing.... I mean it's the same source substance (petroleum). Just an opportunity for oil companies to make a killing without consumers realizing it.

Pretty much what I said. Glad you agree. Now the real question....what are we (or can we ) do to try to fix it??

the main advantage of a diesel is that it will run stuff other than diesel.

I heard a news bit several months back that diesel prices weren't going to drop like gas prices did because Japan was going to be buying up a lot of diesel after the earthquake and tsunami.
