I went and stuck my foot in it...

The windshield washer, that it is.

I've always had to push the foot acutated windshield washer hard to get it to pump. I cleaned the nozzles out but still couldn't get what I thought was an adequate flow of water.

Anyway, yesterday I pumped it to the floor one time to many and it stopped working algother.

The windshield wiper relay engages and work as they should, but I get a barely audile squeak from the pump.

Is there a rebuild kit for this guy or do I have to contact the Classic Center for a new unit?

I thought the foot pump operated windshield washers disappeared in the 60's on like Ramblers and Dodge Darts. What car are you talking about?

The 74 Nova I drove in highschool had the brights switch on the floor. I loved it. The car was 20 years old at that point.

I learned to drive in a 70's Nova oh the power. I, too, remember the left foot actuated dimmer switch. But windshield washer pump?? That's a new one on me.

I had a 1990 Ford Econoline with a stomp switch for the brights. Which tells you something about how long Ford waited to refresh the Econoline's interior styling.

If I recall correctly, Ford introduced that basic platform somewhere around 1977-78.

I would imagine they've got their money's worth out of that chassis. I haven't driven one in years but the early ones were absolutely awful, with the classic old Ford vague truck steering.

In 1990 they were still using twin I-beam front suspension and sloppy pitman arm steering, with about four full turns from lock to lock. I had a distinct sense of deja vu the first time I drove a W123. That van was where I learned the driving technique of hanging my thumb on the steering wheel spoke on the side toward the crown of the road, to take the slack out out of the steering gear.

Update...maybe. The car's in the shop for valve seals and I had them look into this.

It seems that the foot pump and diaphragm are one unit and still available. $65ish.

That reminds me of the story I heard about my aunt learning to drive from my grandpa. He told her to put her foot on the starter, so......

She took her foot off the floor and put it on the dash mounted starter button.

If I was able to get my leg that high and foot on the dash, something is going to hurt tomarrow.

My Mom and Dad had a 51 Mercury that had a dash mounted starter button.

Any one remember when Oldsmobile had the electronic eye to dim the headlights for oncoming traffic? worked good, too good, whenever the headlights reflected on something it would dim the lights.
Think that was a 54 olds.
