Are any 1979 300TD wagons turbo?

I am interested in a 79 wagon with good price and in good condition. It is a good distance away and she doesnt know if its a turbo or not. Did any 79s come with turbo? She says the vin is 12319012002974. I know its an incomplete VIN. Any info would be helpful.

Not from the factory. '81 was the first year of the 300TD turbodiesel.

It's not an incomplete VIN. That's how VINs were structured prior to 1981.

The turbo VIN in US form begins with WDBAB93 or 123193 in MB/Euro form as distinguished from the non-turbo 123190.

That VIN is correct for a pre-1981 vehicle. The standardized 17-digit format did not exist when that car was built.

No 1979 w123 was a turbo from the factory.

The "T" in 300td stands for "Touring".

Don't forget that a '79 will have the Type II climate control (with the servo and different pushbutton panel).

There are Euro W123 turbo TDs. I've been in a couple.

[edit] Maybe that's T123?

The ad has been taken down.

Anyone want a 420sel, though?

I don't believe that was the case. The 75 240d had an NA 617. No 115's had a turbo 617 to my knowledge. I think the first turbo 617 was the 78(?) 116 SD, next was the 123 wagon and finally the 123 sedan.

I would second that. As I recall the 1978 w116 300sd made history as the "first turbodiesel sedan" from a major manufacturer (or a claim to that effect).

That car had the ~80 hp NA engine. It was the first car with a 5 cylinder.

As others noted the turbo came out in 78 in the 300SD.

Have you ever driven a 3.0 na? There is not as big as a difference as you'd think.
