looking at a 82 SD with a probably dead engine. what will drop in
Will any of the 300TD 80- 85 engines fit or are there weird incompatible bits or can you switch the bits from the old engine to the new. I am not too familiar with the 617 engines. What definitely won't fit.?? Cheers Dan

These are qualified donors:
81-85 300SD 81-85 300TD 82-85 300D 82-85 300CD I don't know what it takes to get a 78-80 300SD engine in there. Probably not much. 81-85 300TD engines have an SLS pump attached to the head that can be disabled. Waste isn't the best word but that's what someone looking for a replacement head with SLS might think of it. Sixto 87 300D |

I'm looking at information gleaned from Wikipedia:
1980-1985 300SD W126.120 OM617.951 3.0L I5 So, it looks like the engine in the SD *should* be an OM617. According to the same source, the engine in the comparable model year 300D is an OM617.952. I'm nowhere near an expert to say if the motor mounts and tranny mating will be any problem.

I'm not sure about the Wikipedia entry. The 1980 300SD is a W116, not a W126. The 78-80 300SD uses a 617.950.
If you're acquiring the SD complete with dead engine, you should have everything you need to end up with a running car if all you bring to the party is a good 617.951 or .952 long block... with IP if the SD IP is bad. There might be a little more parts swapping with a .950 but I can't imagine it's a deal breaker. Nor can I imagine you'll find a good used .950 before you find a dozen good .951s and .952s. If the motor comes out of a w123 chassis (300d, 300cd, 300td) you will need to change the 'horns' for the motor mounts. (Also, as noted, the td will have the SLS pump in the head.)
The oil filter canister is different on the w123 motors as well. I believe you need to change it in order to bolt up the existing oil cooler lines. The 78-80 motors installed in the w116 cars have more differences (for example, the oil pan), except for the 1980 California model cars, which I believe got the same engine as installed in the later w126 body. Even moving between years of OM617 installed in a w126 you will run into differences in pulley setup and alternator mountings. The easiest way is always if you can have the entire donor car sitting beside the destinee car to compare each part.
