Pulling diff in 123
I am parting out my 84 280e euro and need to get the diff out. Can I just remove the four bolts holding up the rear diff mount and let the subframe droop and remove the four bolts holding the diff and ease it out?
It looks like this is possible. Can I then also just unbolt the axle ends from the wheel hubs and pull the diff with both half shafts attached too? Also do I need to remove that large bolt that goes in the center (24mm) of the rubber bushing to drop the subframe? |
Yes, you can remove the diff and axles this way, if you break the driveshaft at the flex disk forward of the pinion.
However, once you let the car off the stands, the rear will drop to the ground as the subframe pivots on the front (only) mounts. Jim |

if you winch it yes... you will not be able to push it. The rear tires will be wedged all up in the wheel wells.
But blocks of wood on the subframe may work.. goodluck |
Thanks gentlemen! I may just put in a spare diff to make it easy.;)

Yes TW, I did the same with my 85. After I removed the differential there was not way that thing would move. Had to winch it up on the rollback flatbed.

Hi Tom. After you remove the diff with axles attached, the easy way, will some blocks between the sub frame and body keep the body up of the wheels.
Don't even bother with center stuff on the drive shaft. Just drop the sub frame, undo the diff, pull back from the flex disk and slide out. |

Rigid or semi-rigid? |

Good talking with you.
I know there is someone on the forum needing the good used W123 steering gearbox from this car. IMO $200 is a fair asking, with room for negotiation. Or you can trade it for goodies you need. :) Current price for a rebuilt steering gearbox core charge $225.00 Price $467.72 . |

Yeah, I know where it came from.
I may not have made it clear but my comment was all in good fun.;) I may be old but I really don't mind joking about it.;) |
