Talking Bought some 1987 Champagne

Hi friends and other forum Members. Today, I purchased some 1987 Champagne. Is it rare?

It has 146,581 miles with new tires. Before the seller arrived, I had my piece of cardboard down and was looking underneath it. The rear axle boots are intact, although the passenger side one appears to have shifted some. Went to look at the transmission pan and couldn’t see it. Behold, both belly pans are in place. It has a few more dents than I had hoped. The engine has a #20 head. *GRIN*

The blower didn’t work on the ACC and I didn’t try to check to see if the AC compressor would engage. All the windows work as does the sunroof (with tilt). The factory radio works. I forgot to check the cruise and the steering wheel adjustment.

All the functions work on the Driver’s seat except the headrest. It feels like the motor is trying to raise the headrest. The 2 position memory works. All functions work on the Passenger front seat including the 2 position memory.

The dash has no cracks. The center console’s front lip is not broken. The center console does have a chip or two, so it will need to be addressed. The electric mirror adjustment did not work. Emergency brake does not stay all the way up. And when applying brakes, there is a loud squeek.

Under the hood, the return fuel lines are weeping. The power steering reservoir was down about a third. I noticed a Mercedes Benz bottle of power steering fluid in the trunk. The tools from the tool kit are loose in the trunk.

The test drive was quite impressive. The transmission has no flare on any shift. The ride was quite smooth even at a speed above the limit. *GRIN*

I am selling this car for a recently widowed lady in my church. This car runs and drives great, but is not without some issues (as to be expected for a car this age). First the good news. The car has a newer, factory rebuilt engine. The previous owner (an older gentleman) put regular gas in this original diesel engine ruining the engine. The car has some body and paint issues--not rust but some oxidization and a 18" crease/dent in the passenger rear door. There are some other minor cosmetic and mechanical issues. The heat is always on. Call to come see and drive.

From what I've seen on my car: New turbo, new internals. No belt tensioners or accessories.

Congratulations! Looks like a good buy.

Is your daughter happy with Coda's replacement?

Car arrives today. They don't care because they won't have to ride in it for a long distance.

AMAZING!!!!

Along with the car, I got a big envelope of receipts. Anyone care to guess what I found?

I found the documentation on the factory remanufactured replacement....and it gets better. The transmission was also rebuilt at the same time. In late 2002, at 109K miles. This means I have about 40,000 miles on the engine and transmission.

Needless to say, I'm doing the happy dance.

edit --- just took a test drive; 0-60 in under 17seconds and the cruise control works!

Smile What a score!

good job by you! very nice car! Unreal that it was driven by the proverbial little old lady & comes with a rebuilt engine & tranny????

Jeez, how come I never find these kinds of deals? LOL, i usually end up with a rattling bucket of rust with plenty of hidden defects! haha

I wish this 87 Champagne looked as good as yours, JamesDean. I'm certain a repaint is in my future.

The big exterior issue with buying the old man's car is that it has several old man bumps. I'm certain I will add a few to a vehicle later in life --- just hope it doesn't start for at least another 25 years!!

Searching out all leads is one way of finding the low mileage cars. I bought this car without knowing there was proof of the factory remanufactured engine. I got lucky in that the receipts showed up.
