Yup. Nothing in the wheel opening needs to be open.

Hi, just reading up on the thread here. I just purchased an 83 240D that has been getting water in the trunk. Particularly, there is condensation and water is pooling in the wheel well areas. After reading the thread, it sounds like I might have some clogged up drains. Can you tell me where I can find the drains in question so that I can check to see if they're clogged up? Also, is there a preferred way of cleaning them?
Thanks.

Wheel Well (AND Spare Tire Area) drains

Easy, LOOK in the Bottom of each area for NON-METALLIC RUBBER LOOKING PLUGS!

For reference, here is the w126's wheel wells. I imagine the w123s would be similar:

The larger of the two grommet is a drain. It has three small holes at the bottom of it. The smaller one is sealed up with a grommet.

YOu can just take a key and poke it up to clear the crap out of the drain. I agree it is a bad idea to defeat them. The most important one is the big one toward the front of the well.

If it is falling out I would suggest a simpler method of repairing it is to have a piece of aluminum punched to fit it and pop riviting it in place with a generous portion of gutter seal caulk, after cleaning, rust binding and painting the rusty area.
