85 SD frnt Brake Pad back piece- What is it

Okay, I am about to do my first brake job on the 85 3ooSD. I have more brake jobs than I can count but this had me curious. Before I get started I wanted to compare the new pads etc to what is on the car. The inner ( pad has what appears to be a separate thin steel piece that fits between the pad backing and then a lip into the piston cup. It is not on both pads and a new one did not come in with but there is one on each side. The new pads did not include this. What is it anti - squeal, spacer ?
Thanks

if this is your first MB brake job, you will need a hacksaw blade, to clean the path in the caliper that the pads ride on. scuff up the sides, down to the steel of the caliper, and apply a VERY THIN amount of caliper grease there.

the shim should be replaced, and i usually glue coat both pads, to eliminate the squeel...

VSTech, As always thanks for the help. I have done MB before however none of them had the "shim" so I wanted to be sure.
Thanks again

The shim is used if there is brake noise, I don't use 'em.

If you're removing the caliper for any reason, a small file is much preferred and will do a much better job than a "hacksaw blade".

You restore the caliper to the polished surface that it had when it was manufactured.

Hmmm. Ive never done this on a brake job. So just file down the area around the piston so its nice and smooth? I too am going to do a complete brake job on the SD this weekend. I bought some anti squeal paste but have never used it before. Do I just apply it on the back of the pad where it meets the piston? Thanks
