What model trannys compatible with 300SDL?

I'm looking to swap a tranny from the junkyard for my 300sdl. I need to know what my options are for a direct replacement.
Here's what I know so far:

Model: 722.3xx

Pre -86 diesels - No
420SEL - No
300E up to 1991 - Maybe

Can someone tell me which other models are compatible. Will an '89 300SEL work?

Thank you.

According to the EPC the 300SDL was mated with a 722.321. Model year 86/87. The 300SEL had a 722.319 or 722.351 so I dont think it will bolt up. I think the starter on the diesels is on the opposite side as the gassers.

The starter is on the same side for both diesels and gassers. All transmissions after 86 have the starter on the drivers side 85 and before on the right side

Thumbs up

300SEL will not work... has silly second gear start and wrong WOT governor.

If you can pull the trans yourself, you should be able to find a local place repair whatever is wrong for a decent price. The thing is very basic. I have seen remans for $1200-1500 from places such as Silver Star Transmission - Mercedes-Benz, Dodge Sprinter

If you have a dead reverse, it is a pretty straight forward repair on a bench. Be sure to reseal the thing while it is apart. The servos do fail too but those are not too hard to do either.

You have to get a trans out of a 86-87 om603 car (3.0L 6cyl. Diesel) weather that be a w126 or w124 I just went through this on my 87 300D,I was told there are ways to get the others to work but alot is diff. trans cooler lines, torque convt., output shaft etc. and I still dont believe It would work correctly.
Hope Ive been able to narrow your search for ya
