240d transmission stuck in reverse

I found a guy selling a 1977 240d with a manual transmission. He says it was recently rebuilt but it is now stuck in reverse. What would cause this? Is there any way to check if the damage is severe?

77 uses the old Iron box transmission. the side shift levers are clamped to the shaft via a bolt. the shaft has splines as well as the shift levers.

I could be the bolt is loose and the lever moves on the shaft.

I had this problem with our 80 240D with 2nd gear. wasn`t stuck, but had a slight grinding issue.

X2, check the linkage. I installed a tranny once, got down town and one of the shift rods fell off, I had not put a clip on correctly.
