Anyone know story with this SDL on CL ?

1986 Mercedes 300 SDL turbo

i called and spoke with Carlos about it. He said its in pretty decent shape, some pwr locks not working and sr not working. odo is busted so no idea on miles and he doesnt seem to have many mtc receipts.

dont know what to make of the miami vice prop car body kit and cant tell if someone has chopped springs, hope not.

but its black at least, and no chrome, although that may just be a maaco job.

i might take a look today will let yall know...

The springs are not chopped. The ride height is approximately correct for these vehicles. The tail could be slightly higher, depending on fuel and weight in the trunk.

Be sure you understand what you're getting into with these vehicles when their mileage gets over 200K...............

Ummm, that car has been lowered without a doubt, it is sitting about 2-3 inches lower than a stock SDL. I've had 200-300 pounds in the truck of a 300sdl and it didnt sit that low.

The rear springs and differential mount on yours have been replaced at some point in its life.

Most SDL's will sit at the approximate height of the vehicle in the photo............or lower...............with 25 year old springs and differential mounts.

It is a decent looking car. It probably has not been lowered as all my SDL looks about the same, at least at the front. The back is a little low from the angle of the picture but it may be just as BC said - 25 years old old spring.

Fixing the ODO is a piece of cake. Worn small gears on the shaft. All w126 or BMW has the same gear set, or get a set from eBay $$$. The price is decent too.

Thanks for input. Im sure there is thread on here somewhere which discusses the important things to look for when buying an SDL - can someone direct me to that, or otherwise provide a hit list?

I have owned a 124 in past, and briefly an SDL which I sold before really getting to know it. I think I have engine stuff well in hand but the suspension and body stuff will all be new for me. I know the steering system is complex. I do plan to keep the vehicle I buy forever, so I will be interested in bringing it back up to good running condition.

What is fair price, considering lack of mtc records and non working odo? (assuming everything else checks out reasonably ok)

Always a good read

Hey Paul.

Here's a thread that should be a pre-requisitive reading before (and after) purchasing a w126:

PM sent.
