Quick....and need quick response tranny filter question
Changing tranny filter for first time by myself. 1992 300D. New filter comes with one cork gasket on small hole and two on large hole. Do all three get installed, or does it depend on which transmission it's going on? What confuses me is I don't think I saw any gaskets come off the large hole on the old filter.
Thanks.

I'm pretty sure each hole gets one gasket only. Make sure the old gasket is not stuck to the opening on the transmission. You did not happen to "trial" fit the new gasket did you?

Since I had two new filters, I've concluded that the filter with the extra cork gasket was a manufacturing mistake....just my luck on my very first filter installation! Anyway, no idea what happened to the large gasket from the old filter....maybe I'll discover it as I clean up.

Don't you wish they had transmission stuff in that service manual. 1 gasket each is my experience. My trans kit didn't come with two new silver rings for torque converter and pan gasket. Just one. So i had to just reuse torque converter one. It didn't leak. You can get a few uses i guess out of those crush washers if you need too.
But Don't torque those pan bolts too tight . 8 nM is spec. You can easily ruin your new gasket if you put on on. I just did that last weekend. Over torqued and damn thing still leaked. Had to look up spec on internet cause i cant find tranny stuff in fsm. Where the hell do you get tranny removal procedure and stuff for w124? At 8nM it still leaked at a few spots and then I tightened just a hair more and said hell with it. Hopefully it wont leak too much and i can get until next fluid change.

Well, all finished....time will tell if I'm leak free. Really wonder if this is worth my effort....I think I'd rather have my indie do it who can do it practically with his eyes closed.
So, if I have leaks, do I just tighten a bit or do I complete unseat and reseat the pan?

I do an alternating pattern of slight tightening with a micro-torq wrench if it leaks at the factory spec torque. Its a very low torque spec.

I've got a torque wrench with a range of 20-200 in. lbs. So the 8 nm was 71 in. lbs. What would I try next? 80 or so?

And I wonder at what torque value one risks splitting the gasket.

I've actually found the "E Class Owner's Bible" book to be pretty helpful with basic maintenance stuff like the trans fluid/filter change. Basic torque figures and easy to follow photos. There is also some useful stuff at - News. The last couple filters I've installed had a cork gasket stuck on each hole, and the old gaskets came back out with the old filters. Maybe the old gasket will turn up in your drain pan. ![]()

Yeah 80 should work. Its a pretty minor overall difference.
