1982 240D slow ( real slow )
Hello,
I just purchased a 240D and it is real slow of the line. Let me start by saying I am not expecting to have a race car or 1/4 mile car. I was curious and I timed my 0-60 at 36 seconds with the a/c off. I have checked the linkage and I am hitting the stops on the IP. I did a valve adjustment and changed both fuel filters and no improvement. The car will get up to 80 miles a hour on the freeway and seems to run excellent with exception of acceleration. Is it possible that the IP is delivering enough fuel? Clogged injectors? The car runs great but I'm going to get killed pulling out into traffic! Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

Since you've changed the filters, try doing a diesel purge.
You're also now in a good position to check the compression after adjusting the valves. 0-60 in the 30 second range for an automatic is the norm. A few seconds less with a manual.

Don't forget about the tank strainer, are you seeing the small clear filter filling with diesel, or does it look quite empty with tons of air inside it? Tank strainers can get mighty gummed up over the years and can require cleaning from time-to-time. And as dave said, compression test and diesel purge are also good places to start here. BTW, how does the air filter look?

Swapping intake and return lines should take the tank strainer out of the equation.

I guess u wouldn't suck air back from the return line?

The air filter is new. I am starting to wonder about the fuel strainer. I found a 5 gallon jug of vegetable oil in the car after I bought it. So I am not entirely sure what the PO was putting in the tank.

There was a thread a few months ago by someone who bought a veggie car and needed to correct a lot of issues. Perhaps someone else can remember who posted it and provide a link.

Not unless the tank was real low.

Thanks all. I think I'm going to check the strainer. I might try swapping the lines as suggested.

speaking of veggie, I saw a post here that showed a guy who had the fuel rack in the pump stick due to polymerized fuel, I also have heard the same from a diesel mechanic. The correct time for a 240D 0-100 km/h run is about 20 seconds.

From what I have seen looking into 2 different 85 300D tanks, the return line comes into the bottom of the tank and sticks up about 1 to 2 inches. I always thought from what I have read, I got the impression the return line came in from the top and ended about 1/2 way down. I had both of these tanks out of the vehicle and was cleaning them before installing into a 240D. Charlie

a fuel pressure gauge connected to the ip will tell if you are getting correct fuel flow/pressure. low pressure = low flow.
My tank screen was very dirty.
