OM603 head removal question
Hi all,
First, yes I searched the archives and no, the answer wasn't there. I'm about to remove the cylinder head on my 1987 300D, OM603.960 (bad gasket or cracked head.) The problem is, the factory service manual leaves out a few steps of the procedure. It says to unbolt the ehaust brackets down by the tranny and even shows pictures. But it does NOT say where to disconnect the exhaust up by the turbo and/or manifold! It does say the the manifold and head are removed as one piece, but doesn't specify what's included in that assembly. So, here's the question(s): 1- Where exactly do you disconnect the exhaust? 2- Does the turbo come out with the head, or will it stay in the car? I was hoping to get the answer from the MB WIS discs, but I can't get a license for it so I'm SOL... Regards, |

If I were going to do it I would remove the turbo and intake manifold and get them out of the way. Just my personal preference. Once you get some of the plumbing associated with the turbo you will see where it bolts up to the exhaust pipe.
