1983 300TD Warning and Glow Plug Light Oddities
Good day everyone-
Background: When I got my wagon last May, the glow plug light would come on normally when the key was in the glow position. After 10 or 15 seconds, the light would dim but remain lit. I took this to mean that under normal conditions the light would have shut off at that point, but something was causing it to remain dimly lit. The light would turn off completely when the Fasten Seat Belt light went out after starting the motor. Foreground: Yesterday I turned the key to the glow position, the GP light came on, and then went out after 10-15 seconds. I though "hey it finally works as intended". I started the car and after about 45 seconds of running, the GP light and the Fasten Seat belt light illuminated. I did not hear the GP relay click, but I wasn't listening for it either. I tried unbuckling my belt and the warning buzzer sounded. I rebuckled and the buzzer stopped. The lights went out again after about 2 minutes of motor running time and didn't return the entire trip. No other noticeable signs of problems in the electrical system. I don't smell anything burning and no smoke (YAY). This same scenario is repeated upon three successive starts throughout the day. Any ideas? Bad ground? Is this causing my glow plugs to light? Do I just say " Oh well, she runs great otherwise" Thanks in advance!

bad ground
Check the cluster itself, it relies on connection between the three parts (left/right/center) to maintain grounding continuity for the bulbs on the right back to the big plug on the left.

that GP relay is from a 93 300D2.5 I think, there may be an issue with it's circuit.

IIRC, it has no fuse under the cover. internally protected from shorts.
perhaps there is something in there that confuses the dash lights? I do remember it had 5 pins, instead of the 4 pins on the control plug, but the 4 pin harness connected just fine.
