1995 E300D Differential fluid

Hey Guys,

I wanted to check the oil level in my diff tonight because I am going on a 2 hour trip tomorrow and I have not checked this yet.

I noticed that there is a hose that attaches to the differential. I notices that the hose runs towards the front of the car. I am assuming that the hydraulic tank under the hood is for the fluid. it does appear to be empty. The question is if I can fill it with gear oil and if that will fill the differential? Or do I get to the open the plug on the diff to fill it?
