SLS pump drive gear in head off timing chain

Hello, I am reassembling the head on an 85 300 td wagon and have lost the mark on the gear that drives the sls pump. I cannot remember which way the gear faces out. The gear itself is slightly different from one side to the other and I would like to put it back the same way it came out for chain wear reasons. One side of the gear has a rough sand cast finish in the middle and the other side is machined to a more smooth finish with two center punch marks on either side of the splined hole in the center of the gear. Anyone know which side faces out and which side faces in. Thanks. I have looked in the service manual and it does not mention it....at least where I looked. Searched google and other sites.

Any wagon guys know this? I'd post a picture but the computer does not accept my camera anymore.

Not me. I searched on here for pictures but the best I could find were Forced Induction's picture with the pump removed when he was blocking off the pump access to the head. Couldn't see the gear in that picture.

I have an 80 wagon engine sitting on the ground with the valve cover off...
I'm fairly certain I can get a pic up tonight.

That would be great. I am not in a rush since I have to wait for parts anyways. Thanks.

Anyone else know this or have access to more detailed info. I don't want to put it on backwards to find out that the offset is different from one side to the other creating a situation where the timing chain does'nt ride straight on that gear and fly off or something. I am betting that those two punch marks indicate which way faces out but do not know which. I marked it but the mark has come off....I guess paint marker and oil don't agree. Thanks

It kinda works, To be more accurate I need a picture of the front of the cam gear. There is a machined surface on one side and more of a raw casting on the other. In 32-640 it does show close to the bottom a cutaway side of the gear which I guess could be construed from the cutaway that there appears to be a larger machined out area on the back side as compared to the front side, but I can't tell by that picture for sure. It is item #36 in the picture second from the bottom of the document titled 615,616 and 617 oil pressure pumps.

On second thought the side that is machined is larger so maybe I could just go with that picture on 32-640. Thanks again Army.

Just looking at the little cross shaped driver that is behind the pump and is in the shape of a circle. That thing has a slightly different side from one to the other with one side being totally flat and the other being slightly rounded on the corners of the cross shape in the middle. hmm. I wonder if it is suppossed to be facing in or out.
