$1500 for an '83 240D?

Hey guys!

What do you think of this car -- found it at the local dealer (gag), they listed it for $1800:

Front seats shot.

Interior fine except for drivers door -- panel worn out.

Driver's door hinges worn -- door sags.

Windows leaking.

Rear bumper loose on drivers side, held on with duct tape

Small rustout on drivers side rear fender tip, in the usual place.

Shocks soggy.

Brake pedal high and hard, brakes grab.

Else clean -- no other rust, floors solid, starts immediately, oil pressure 3 atm at idle, oil looks normal (not 50 weight!), drives fine except S L O W -- more so than normal? Slower than the 220D anyway, NO smoke with the pedal all the way down.

Tranny seems fine, no unusual noises.

I offered $1000 for it, they counteroffered $1500. Should I hold out of the $1000 or just jump on it and retire the 220D?

Thanks in advance!

Peter

Yes, Peter, play hardball.

I see two diesels for sale in the Grand Rapids, MI area and they sound in better conditions:

MERCEDES 1982 240D good daily driver, $1500/best. (616)453-3409

MERCEDES BENZ 1985 turbo diesel, new shocks/tires, runs/drives/looks good, CD $1500/best 647-2579

Hey Bo & Peter:

Kirk bought one of those and we're trying to find the other one. Have called 10 times cuz his answering machine says that he lowered it to $1000.
I would not pay more than $1000 for the 240d as we're close to those prices with better options.

Don

Don:

Which one did Kirk buy, the 240D or the 300D? The 300D looks interesting to me.

There is also a 85 300CD for sale in the SE part of Grand Rapids. It is in autotrader.

$1000 sounds high to me. How about $500 or $600? It will take a lot of money to restore this car. In general, I 'll rather pay top dollars for a MB in top condition.

Sounds like it might make a decent parts car. You should counter offer $500. Maybe you'll actually even be able to drive it for a few months. Don't expect to pick up any models with it though.

Bo:

Kirk (rskirk90) bought the 240d. A very nice car which becomes his 3rd MB within 4 months. He has moved ahead of me so I'm on the lookout. I keep going back and forth with getting out of my Volvo. It has been good to me though and doesn't owe me a thing.

LOL, Don. His plate registration costs will soon exceed the value of the car in the state if MI. My 1987 300TD takes about $170 for the plate due to the $49,000 list price when new.
So is he still interested in that 300D? Are you?

300D gone

I called on the other GR diesel...Sold. Some guy probably got a great deal.
The other thing, I recently (3 weeks) bought an '81 300TD and was PLEASANTLY surprised at how little the title/reg wa$!
They told me that since it was pre-'84 they base it on vehicle weight class, not acutal price when new. Saved me about $200!!
