73 220D injector pump issues

Well, been awhile since I was on here, had to start as a new user.

My wife was driving the merty as we call her, parked it one evening then would not start the next morning. Here is what I found:

1. No start, turns over with odd sound. Sounded like no fuel in the Inj pump and cranking with less resistance, kind of faster turn over.
2. Inspected the Inj pump, think it had lost fuel and needed to be primed (original primer too, but has worked fine on her running it empty, I know), would not prime.
3. No oil in the Inj pump, I check it at oil changes. Uses its own oil source not from the engine oil.
4. Refilled the oil and over night all of it leak out on the ground.

Any ideas? Seals bad or pickup diaphragm bad? Is it shot and needing rebuild? I have completely rebuilt the drive line, suspension/ends/bushing/bearings, all mounts, Alternator, AC system, and exhaust, many more too. So that said I'll fix what ever it is. My real question is should I pull the inj pump and rebuild it or try a seal kit & diaphragm?

Thanks in advance for any input, Dain

Where did the oil leak out from?

"turns over with odd sound"; If you can see the Camshaft from the Oil Fill hole; remove the cap and have some one crank to see if the Camshaft is turning. Or remove the Valve cover to view the same and inspect the Camshaft and Valve Train.

Wasn't there a post on a thread in the last six months or so which claimed that new diaphragms for the IP were no longer available? Or am I just inventing a memory?

Cam shaft turns as well as the guts of the Inj pump viewed from both oil caps. Could not locate the exact point from leaking, but I just degreased the engine bay and will add some oil and see if I can find the leak.

In my first post I was speaking of checking the Engine Camshaft.

Right and, that's what cam shaft means, it turns when cranked.

My issue with my Inj pump, can a leak be repaired in the car or do I need to pull it.

It is not an engine timing issue, info mileage is 78k on a factory rebuild.

Thanks

The Fuel Injection Pump also has a Camshaft inside of it.

When ever I assume something when I am trouble shooting and do not check that item often it turns out to be the source of the problem.

The reason I commented on the Engine Camshaft is on other Engines when the Valve Timing has been off I have seen the easy cranking symptom.
You also said there was a noise during the cranking; could that be a Piston hittng a Valve?

I think it would be a good idea to locat where the Odd Sound is coming from.

well. the odd sound was no fuel in the inj pump. replaced the primer pump (old one was letting air through) and the secondary fuel filter. fresh battery (charge)and started right up. Runs great now and selling.

At least it was an easy inexpensive fix.
