You don't need special tools if you are creative -

This Harbor Freight tool will hold the pulley - Pulley Spinning Tool

I use an 8mm hex key with some pipe to loosen and tighten the bolt.

Come to think of it, though, I've never heard of a fan clutch stuck on. It's plausible but I've never heard of it actually happening other than someone rigging the clutch.

Mine went out at 311.5k.

Sounds like a 747 taking off. Fan speed increases with RPM and is locked up always. Supposedly the fan blows up around +4k rpm.

i'm guessing that has to do with the fact that it's unbalanced? why do these fans have irregular spacing between the blades anyways? i'm guessing it creates turbulent air flow which gives better heat transfer? i don't know.

The asymetry probably increases the natural frequency to inhibit resonance.

the fan can fail in a permanently engaged position, that usually occurs when either the silicone oil has turned to a black gel or the bearing has siezed.

In any case do not drive around like that, take the fan off or replace it. btw - the fan can roar at even 60C on the gauge if its summer and the A/C is on. The heat from the condenser can cause the fan to work.

To test - start the engine dead cold, pop the hood accelerate engine, the fan should roar at first then would decouple from the engine in about 3 or 4 seconds.

The fan shroud needs to come out. yours should separate and come out in two parts. Then an 1/8" wrench will fit in the hole in the pulley to hold it still. Harbor freight has the other pullet tool. I take a long handle 8 mm Allen wrench and slip a deep socket with an extension on it and whack it with my palm.

My clutch was roaring occasionally, but since I replaced it the new one roars all the time. Guess I have to do it all over again.

Same as you my fan was locked.
I just took it off, the temperature is a sturdy 90 degres, never more. The Electric fan at the front kicks in when the temperature is too high.
You don't need a specific tool to hold the pulley, there is a little hole at the back where you can insert an allen key that will rest on the pump and this will able you to unscrew the fan.
I did it few times with the rad on but some nicely suggested to remove the top of the rad to be able to tilt it slightly, this will save some knuckles

My is just the opposite, as it spins freely. With the engine running you can stop the fan with your hand, I first used a magazine to test the theory.
