You don't need a specific tool to hold the pulley, there is a little hole at the back where you can insert an allen key that will rest on the pump and this will able you to unscrew the fan.
I did it few times with the rad on but some nicely suggested to remove the top of the rad to be able to tilt it slightly, this will save some knuckles
did u have to take the radiator out?

Ni Ididn't, I always did it with the rad on, but its tight.
Then if you take the top bar that hold the rad and tilt the radiator slightly this give you more room. It is up to you if you like to fiddle with tight space or prefer a wee more room. But again I never move the rad meself.

^^ the fan should spin free uptil the time the BMS bends out - this is achieved by hot air of the radiator. In summer with A/C the fan more or less stays engaged. In winter you will hear it roar then go quiet.
