E300 to E320 Bluetec

Well, my indie brain farted while I was on vac and openned a water jacket in the head trying to get GP #6 a couple of weeks ago. His socket didn't fit snugly so he gound maybe 1mm away. Must have been a bad head casting. Opened up a 1x2mm slit. Glad I didnt try it during my previous 3 tries getting it out. Thought about it.....

His Lia Ins totaled the car and paid handsomely too, so the E300 is now headed to parts heaven.

Had been shopping for something different and as i had no car, pulled the trigger on a 09 E320 Bluetec and drove it home from PHX on Fri PM and Sat morning.

Love it. As big of an imporvement in tech, performance and luxury going from the W210 to the W211 as it was going from W123/124 to the W210.

Happy again.

Congrats.

I would like to drive a BlueTec to see what they are like. If only they made one in a true wagon.

PS. In your sig, I think you mean "a major oops", not "a major opps".

Will have to edit that; was too big an op for me....

It has tons more power than the E300 which was tons more than the W124 and W123 before that and has moe creature comforts.

Has to be a bittersweet moment. It never ceases to amaze me what will total an otherwise great car.

Will be interested to hear how the new one works out for you.

Edit: I saw the generic Blue fluid at Autozone the other day.

Congrats Terry. I know you had been threatening to do that for awhile. Sure hope you will still answer questions about the 210 when I have them.

I was amazed at the difference in technology between my 240D and the E300D. I had heard the Bluetec's were another leap forward and you confirmed that. I may have to get one too just so you will still answer my questions.

So what's the disposition of your E300 for those of us looking for parts? Got anything leftover that you want to get rid of?

Len - The engine on the E320 is packed in so tight it may be one that a mech gets to mess with if it needs something other than air filters, serp belt and oil changes. I have lots to learn; my outlook may change later....may not.

I will have to inventory the 606.962 supplies I have. I know there is the Inj and DV sockets, an oil filter or two, an old GP and K40 relay and other misc stuff.

i've got an 08 bluetec in addition to the 97 e300. the bluetec terrifies me. on the one hand, it makes 33% more hp and more than double the torque of my '97, while also giving much higher mpg's (nearly 40, compared to the nearly 30 i get in the '97). but on the other hand, it's so electronic-laden, i just don't see how it'll ever become a diy persons car like the older ones. it seems you need a special mercedes service computer to do anything at all. and the v6 is really crammed in there, no working room, i wish it was a straight-6 instead. plus the new ones have $expensive$ problems if you run them on high concentrations of biodiesel, where i can happily run b100, wvo, or whatever kind of nasty fuel mixture i want in the '97.

Wow,

Both sorry for your loss and happy for your new acquisition.

The E320 sounds like a great performer, but I am afraid that I will probably retreat to earlier models after the W210 gives up the ghost.... which I hope is not for a very long time.

Looking under the engine cover of a v6 Bluetec looks about like looking under the hood of a Ford Powerstroke.

I have an '08 Bluetec. Routine service items so far has been as easy as ever - topside oil change, fuel filter, and air filters. The air filters are a bit more labor intensive, but it's not rocket science. Don't forget the cabin filter - it's over on the passenger side at the firewall.

The one item that puzzles me on this car is the serpentine belt. There are a bunch of engine components in front of the belt, you can hardly even see the belt let alone access it.

This car has the "fill from the bottom" transmission. Seems reasonably straightforward to service, albeit with a different set of tools and skills than was traditionally required.

The engine isn't the prettiest thing, but I sure like the way it works!
