Grease in replacement door checks??

Hi!

Door checks need replacement sometimes. My 82 300cd was no exception, so since I have the door apart, this is prime time.

I got an OE unit from Phil, and it's surprisingly free of grease. Perhaps there is a ton in the slider assembly that will come out when it gets used. Not sure.

Should I add some supplemental grease? Looks like a #2 consistency.

My replacement door checks which are only a few years old are giving sounds of imminent failure. I'd grease them. No evidence of grease in the replacements when I installed them.

Ok thanks. I have synthetic chassis grease and then Dow molykote silicone grease which is for ball bearings. Thoughts?

I have found the replacement grade door checks to be of vastly inferior quality to the originals. Grease it heavily. I greased mine when I put one in a few years ago and it began creaking after barely a year!

Mine are coupe door checks that are likely different than what you would need for your TD or E300. I got them from Phil, he got them from MB. In my DIY thread there is an image of the package that the door check came on and there is a part number on that.

I have noticed that the door straps sourced from Mercdes are of better quality than the aftermarket ones. I ordered several from Mercedes and an aftermarket source.

Any grease that is water resistant it seems. I think the recommended MBZ grease is not so water resistant.

Is there an actual MB recommended grease? That would be news to me.

Based upon your comment, marine grease would be the best stuff, but I find it hard to believe that door checks are subject to water washout inside the door.

I think failure of door checks is more due to unlubed pins at the mount point to the body. Mine was nasty dry and worn, but tight. I used molykote 33 in there for a thinner grease without as much body/thickener. The pin definitely didn't just fall into place in the hole...

I am replacing my door checks on my wagon right now. They seem to be completely devoid of grease. Also, read on another thread that the MBZ grease that is recommended (I think in the FSM) is not very water resistant.

Not sure if water is getting into the door or just condensation eventually degrading the grease. But, seems that just about all checks that come out are bone dry.

Well the OE, original check that I pulled from my '82 CD, which is a painted unit matched to the car, had a ton of black grease in it. So they were at least at some point greased. Te grease remained, though much was squeezed out the holes in the check, and the grease had also separated in time.

New ones, per the pic above, have NO grease in the track, and while there is a slight layer of oil on the whole thing, plus a tiny bit of grease seemingly in the ball bearing assembly that the check strap is connected to, Im not sure how much will spread over the whole length.

THus why I added some synthetic #2 grease, to augment. Hopefully it works. Ill bet checks installed dry is why many have issues...
