'83 300SD Front main seal (crankshaft)
Got oil pouring out and appears to be the crankshaft seal.
I had an old diesel van (GM) and had same thing, changed the seal and oil still poured out. Question: Should I change the seal or is something else causing a build-up oil pressure causing this? The power steering is also screwy now too. Fluid level is perfectly fine in that respect. Why would engine oil coming out of front crank shaft seal cause steering to be rough. That's how I discovered the problem. Luckily I was only a few hundred feet from home and by the time got home I say I'd lost a quart of engine oil. ??? Thanks. |

Oil-soaked drive belt, perhaps?

Can you determine the precise location of the leak?
Inspect the oil cooler lines.
