83 300d 722.315 tranny out!!

I was driving to school the other day and it was running good and everything was good until I stopped at a stop sign and went to take off again. There was nothing there I could punch it to the floor and nothing... I tried other gears and still nothing, but reverse works good. Doesn't slam in to gear or anything.

This tranny does have 350,000 miles on it...I think it might be the B-2 piston but am not sure exactly how to troubleshoot and narrow down the problem.

I did try to drive it again today. Same problem but better. When I put it in Drive it will slowly take off and I can feel something catch, but then if you touch the accelerator you lose and it stops not all the way but you definietly can feel it doesn't want to move

B2 does sound like a likely candidate but have you checked the obvious like oil level and selector linkage?

There are some pictures and links in this thread that might help

(The 722.303 is similar to your .315 but it has an electronic speedo set up)

EDIT - this article looks good for you too

I have a spare i just dont know if its good because I got the car without it running but I do have to pull the tranny out of it first. I dont see why it would be the linkage Because reverse works and when i do put it in gear it slowly creeps forward until i hit the pedal..

It is your choice to invest in parts before hand or not. But, some have found that the B2 Band broke and not the B2 Piston.

Remove the B2 Piston and see if the Band end is still there and push on it to see if it springs back.

I'm trying to help you cover all bases - just in case. A forum is a funny place to try and trouble shoot a problem - I don't get to experience the problem like you do. That's why I kind of blat out as many of the possibilities that I can think of so that you can decide what to do. You are after all ultimately responsible for doing the job.

The B2 piston seems to be widely available. It is cheaper than the B1 - whether you consider the price to be cheap enough though is another thing! In Mercedes terms it is one of the cheap ones in my opinion.
