Vent line to air filter housing blowing oil sometimes

Smelled diesel while driving a couple of times in traffic, thought it was heavy trucks in front of me. Later again near home, no traffic.

Expected to find a weeping return line or such, instead there's a big oil residue stain all around the vent on the valve cover. Flex elbow looks to be in one piece, still has the original spring clamp at the bottom.

This car has 100k or so, with about zero blowby. Is it just the clamp getting tired or could something be causing some intermittent overpressure?

The oil residue wasn't there last weekend, but it's not happening constantly as by the time I got home it was dry on the v/cover.

I used to see this as a fact of life on my 250k mile SD but was surprised to see it on this car.

I have Blow-by and I tried to measure my Crankcase pressure and there was not enough pressure to show up on the Gauge even when I revved the Engine.

The obvious thing is to pull the Vent Tubing and see if there is any restriction and also check the inside the Breather; if there is a Breather.

Was there Oil coming out of the far end of the Vent Tubing?

I pulled it and not that I could tell on quick exam. The pressure coming through it with the motor running was evident but low.

It was getting dark when I got home. I'll look into it on the weekend.

I don't think that blowby produces the same smell as fresh diesel fuel.

Good point. Put it this way: Everything related to the fuel system was bone dry, not a hint of a leak. The dispersal of oily film around the v/c vent was the only thing I saw out of the ordinary. There was no smell of diesel outside the car when I got home.

When I first got the scent I assumed it would be a return line, as they're due to be changed. But they're dry.

at 100K, the elbow may need replacing. go ahead and replace both elbows, the new soft rubber will not leak.
you may want to pull the air cleaner and replace the mounts, and clean out the oil separator and seal it back up with silicone and tighten the tabs back down.
oh, and I'm guessing you are talking about your 85D in your sig?

Yes, that one. I don't hold the older cars to the same standard of odour-free motoring....

I have about 70,000 on my 617.950 rebuild running 14.7 psi of boost. I burn no measureable oil between changes, but I do get oil residue in the wastegate line and in the intake elbow.

Here is my theory:

The early 617's, like mine, had a very crappy tube-style vent in the cam cover and no oil separator. The oil residue isn't blow-by, per-se, but rather the oil mist being thrown about by the camshaft and being carried out the vent under normal crankcase pressure.

I can start and run my 617.950 without an oil cap and get nothing out of the opening until the rpm's come up, and then it is simply slinging oil out off of the cam.

I solved the problem by installing an oil trap, used in body shops on the air lines, in the vent tube.
