Your engine is far too clean. Please dirty it up as soon as possible. And yes, the tensioner shock is the cause of some loud sounds, on my 124 I was able to change it without taking off the fan pulley by carefully loosening the bolts to give room for the bolt on the tensioner shock.

Nice, mine makes that sound while the glow plugs are active. I put a "like" on your video to balance out the other rude person who "disliked" it...

Great video!! Another thing that will cause a similar noise to occur even with a good tensioner shock is the alternator pulley. I had a 96e300d whose alternator went bad. Put in a new alternator that had its own pulley attached, and all of a sudden, I had a noise similar to yours. It was then that I found out, that the old alternator had a "clutch pulley" that compensated for the power stroke of the engine. Switched out the new pulley with the old one, and the noise was gone. Later on, I checked in the trouble shooting section of the shop manual, and the lack or failure of the "clutch pulley" was noted as a possible cause of the noise you experienced. Thanks again for the video..........

I had the same noise and fixed it by removing the bolt and cutting a strip out of a coke can, wrapped it around the threads removing the clearance and put it all back together. Still quiet and it was a "free" fix.
Great video, tried to "like it" but I am not a member and don't have a log on.

I had the same problem and figured it out the same way. I bought the shock last winter and when I went to install it I was shocked to find that the fan and fan pulley appears to have to be removed to get the bottom bolt off. I removed the top mounting bolt and found that the sleeve that is supposed to be adhered to the rubber had come loose. The top of the shock mount appeared to be hitting the block. I found a plastic oil drain plug washer in my junk box that the mounting sleeve would fit through. I re-installed everything with the plastic washer between the block and the shock top. The noise is gone.
