The best part of the picture is the tach needle hitting the red. Where was this?

The speedo still has 20 mi/h more to go and the tach another 700 rpm.

DieselHead- on about a 10 mile flat straight stretch early this morning with no traffic. Kinda nervous about looking through a viewfinder going flat out.

loubapache- Sorry it hits the governor at the redline. Won't go any faster, even downhill. Believe me, I have tried. I don't believe in soot in the pipe. Anyway, with all the bad posts about the 3.5, I try to blow it up at least once a month.

Fair enough.

116mph is still a pretty darn good clip that most cars never get to see. This 200 Saturn I drive around, when the weather isn't quite right for the 300D, tops out at about 90. Any greater and I'm afraid the sucker will shake it's self apart. I actually got a speeding ticket in it going 87mph. Dunno how I was going that fast, but thats another story.

I don't have a picture and I'm actually quite paranoid about speeding as I barely missed a ticket yesterday (I was looking at a map and I was doin about 30-35mph... in a 35mph zone). The suv behind me overtook me and the cop just pulled him over. If I hadn't looked at the map I'd have driven faster.

The fastest I did was about 90+mph in the 300CD. It actually felt solid at that speed. However, since i haven't hit the highway for a while I've only done 60mph max... but the 300D's can easily hit 80mph I think..
Quite good for a 20+/- yr old diesel.

PS, your 140 must have felt awsome at speed, I know my 126 does.. don't even compare with the 123's.

turbodiesel - Feels very stable at speed. I have a Chevy truck that has a chip and will do the exact same 116 mph but it feels like its going 30 mph faster than the Mercedes. By the way, how high will the 300SD tach up. I see you are at about 4600. The 350 will only go to 4400 and every gear full throttle shifts at 4400.

Note the fuel economy guage

It's still at about 12 1/2 mpg. I don't think that my old '66 Porsche 911 did that well back in 1969 when we covered 200 miles in New Mexico (going north from Alamagordo Air Base) in 1 hour and 50 minutes.

The '66 Maserati Quattroporte which replaced the '66 Porsche in '76 would cruise at 120 nicely, but get about 7-8 mpg.

Heh

Im not even going to bother since I can only get about 90mph on a nice long flat run. I might be able to hit 100 if there is a 15 mile downhill windy stretch about.

turbodiesel,

You've got alot more to go. Heck, your motor doesn't even have a redline to worry about!

Are you low on washer fluid, or does your sensor not work like mine?

not a benz diesel but,

My Passat wagon TDI will top 100, if I use the aforementioned long downhill windy stretch.

Only done it once though, just to see. It was not a very secure feeling at that speed. Very floaty, not to mention loud as hell. Up to about 90 or so, it'll cruise all day. Over that, and I want some upgraded suspension, and wider wheels all round.

Maybe I've just been driving on the crowded East Coast too long. I used to cruise up and down from Glasgow in my Dad's Saab at over a ton all the time. Felt quite normal to hit 130 occassionally.

The governor on the OM603.96x tops out at 4800 rpm on the tach.
