240 D - replacing a cracked OEM aircleaner with something aftermarket

this is to be a temporary measure, so no need to get all excited and tell me i am doing something thats unnecessary/bad

i am almost done putting my 240d back together, and one of the last things i need, that was not at the parts yard this week, is a new uncracked aircleaner......that thing got so bad, even with the new aircleaner mounts, that the whole thing vibrates so loud that people think i have no muffler.....

so i am considering my options, even though they will be only short-term, until i get a 240d aircleaner next time they have one at the parts yard.....

so i was thinking, maybe one of those cone style airfilters, connected right onto the intake manifold, or maybe a small one of those "chrome aircleaners" that they sell cheap at the parts stores for old american v8 cars.....

any suggestions ? my 1980 routes the crankcase vapors directly into the intake manifold, so my air intake is air only, no breather required (which i love)

the only issue i can see with this will be clearance between the intake mainifold and the closed hood......i figured out how im going to measure this distance, so i guess we will see......

any input would be appreciated

I'll check my parts room and see if I have one lying around. If not I'll grab one at the yard next time I see one for ya.

Is your air cleaner the polished aluminum version or the black steel version. I believe the aluminum versions are prone to failure where they mount to the brackets causing the vibration. I know my 240D needed a new air cleaner housing because of this issue.

If the Air Filter Housing is beating on the Intake Manifold there is a thread some where where you put a piece of Heater Hose between the Housing and the Intake Manifold and that stops if from beating on it.

I did that on My 300D when I had the Stock Air Filter Housing and it works.

But, I am not sure what your Air Filter Housing looks like?

The 80 has the steel black bottom and aluminum lid.

yeah its not touching the valve cover......its all in order, but its damage comes from years of use banging around with no rubber aircleaner mounts (thanks previous owners)

the thread on the center bolt to secure the lid is also thoroughly stripped, so this contributes to the rattling.....

yeah so anyone who has an aircleaner for me PM me i guess......i still need some temporary solution though, i will have the car on the road the day after tomorrow, and i refuse to put the old rattlebox back on again

Temp solution-you can get a paper cone filter from a parts store (Don't know the number, just start looking at boxes) that you can slap onto the intake. You may need to use/make a PVC pipe adapter to make it fit.

Or a shopvac filter

For the 300D, you can get a new air cleaner bracket for ~$17 now (I did). They used to cost ~$100. I don't know if the 240D part is the same.

The 240D is completely different than the mount for the turbo engine.
The 240 filter mounts right onto the intake manifold.
Space between the housing and the VC is about one inch.

Looks like maybe 4 inches from the bottom of the air filter housing to the top of the hose from the valve cover where if plugs into the lid.
